Not Papyrus fragment written in Greek in Egypt on 29 October 159 AD preserving an account detailing a contract from tax-farmers to collect taxes from fullers, specifically the levy on natron. The term πλυνοσ relates to the operations performed by fullers in washing and cleaning newly woven cloth, chiefly wool and linen, as well as cloth soiled by use. Natron was 'one of the principal cleaning agents of the ancient world'. The document records monies received in the month of Phaophi from five contributors (retail-dealer or fuller), the capacity of the boat used for transporting the natron and amount paid for its use, with recurring payment of 14 dr 2 ob for 100 slabs of natron. Translation (Rees, Bell, Barnes, Merton II, 1959; with amendments by Youtie 1961): 'From Dionysius also called Apollonius son of Apollonius and from Diogenes son of Diogenes, Hermas son of Sarapas, Theon son of Hermas, and their associate 'tax-farmers for the contract for the fullers (natron)' [1961] ('inspectors of the boat-hire contract for the fullers' [1959]), in the present 23rd year of our lord Antoninus Caesar. The monthly account of the receipts from the 1st to the 30th of Phaophi, as follows: Pibecius, for the hire of one boat of 60 artabas' burden, 30 drachmas, and on account of 100 slabs of natron, 14 drachmas 2 obols; total 44 drachmas 2 obols. Centyrion, for the hire of one boat of 50 artabas' burden, 25 drachmas, and on account of 100 slabs of natron, 14 drachmas 2 obols; total 39 drachmas 2 obols. Parthes, for the hire of one boat of 80 artabas' burden, 40 drachmas, and on account of 100 slabs of natron, 14 drachmas 2 obols; total 54 drachmas 2 obols. Horion, for the hire of one boat of 60 artabas' burden, 30 drachmas, and on account of 100 slabs of natron, 14 drachmas 2 obols; total 44 drachmas 2 obols. Pallius, for the hire of one boat of 60 artabas' burden, 30 drachmas, and on account of 100 slabs of natron, 14 drachmas 2 obols; total 44 drachmas 2 obols. Total for the month, 226 drachmas 3 obols. Also to be added for the month Thoth of the current year, 239 drachmas 4 obols, if still owing(?). Grand total of the account, 466 drachmas, paid to the banker.
