Cartulation coincided with Arabic numerals in the upper margin. La c. 59 is Mutila; pages adorned at cc. 1r, 67r: a c. 1r, with no. 6, civic coat of arms of Trani and the gentile coat of arms of the Venetian governor of the city Pietro Priuli; a c. 67r, with no. 82, two angels holding a picture with a poetic composition attributed to notary Nicola de Fabritiis, in praise of Priuli, around the frame text decorated with plant and animal motifs; History of the manuscript: this is the Red Book of the city of Trani, which contains the concessions and privileges granted to Trani by the various rulers from 1196 to 1556. Its importance derives mainly from the fact that most of the original documents have been dispersed. The transcription of documents begins at c. 67r with no. 82, while the previous maps show the indices of different copyists. The ms. can be divided into two parts, in relation to the time of transcription of documents: the first (cc. 67r-173v with nos 82-178) contains 59 diplomas of different principles from the houses of Swabia, Anjò, Durazzo and Aragon, transcription desired by the Venetian governor of Trani Pietro Priuli (early 16th cent.), begun by notary Nicola de Fabritiis and continued by notaries Angilberto de 'Quartieri, Egidio Aycardo, M The last document of the first part (c. 173v) is authenticated on September 24, 1522, but in reality it is 1521, since the Byzantine calendar was still in use at the time (see Red Book of University of Trani, p. 13). In the second part (cc. 185r-266r with nos. 219-300), the documents exhibit no authentication and concern concessions and privileges obtained by the city in the period after the Aragonese rule; the last document is from 1556 (c. 266r). A c. 350r, with no. 455, in the lower margin, annotation ms. dated September 8, 1721, and c. 351v present the date 1755; until this time the Ms. was kept in the Chancellery of the town of Trani, after which the Vischi family took possession and donated it to the library.
