| Not | Call Number - 0001043; Detail of page from the Kulliyat (Collected Works) of the popular Persian Poet Sa'di. Shows text at the top and bottom of the page, with the central image depicting a battle scene. All figures in the image are dressed in armour and many can be seen carrying weapons. Towards the bottom of the image, a severed head can be seen lying on the ground, red paint indicating blood pouring from the neck. Read widely throughout the world and influencing the writings of individuals such as Diderot, Hugo and Voltaire, the works of Sa’di (d.1291), were first collected into a single volume during the fourteenth century and are known for their social and moral themes. An illustrated volume of Sa’di’s Kulliyat, the miniatures from this manuscript appear to depict scenes from within the text and are rich in both colour and detail. Sources: Arnold, E.
