Not Call Number - 0003230; Shelf Mark - Or.Ms 20; Muhammad receives his first revelation through the angel Gabriel. The Prophet is seated in the midst of a landscape of conventionalised rocks. Gabriel, a winged figure wearing a highly ornate Seljuk crown, approaches him from the left. In this respect and in the general iconography this scene follows a Western scheme, probably an Annunciation from a Byzantine source. The angel's wings, however, are attached to the whole length of the arms; this is not a Western convention, but neither is it normal in Far Eastern or indeed Persian art. It possibly derives from some Christian tradition of the Eastern churches. However, in general this composition has passed through a Chinese filter: the rocks of Byzantine form have been transformed by the addition of fringes of vegetation and by the use of blue, green and gold colour into the conventional Chinese landscape tradition for mountains. It is surprising that the face of the Prophet has escaped obliteration at the hand of some later puritan, unlike some other faces in this manuscript. The spirit of introverted meditation is convincingly depicted. Like the Annunciation scene [f.22r] this picture is attributed to the Luhrasp Master.
