The beginning of the sroll is rounded and the other end is attached to a wooden roller. Each 'page' or column of text is decorated with a border painted with an orange pigment. The Book of Esther recounts the story of the salvation of the Jews in the Persian Empire through the actions of the eponymous heroine. The text is read in synagogues on the spring holiday of Purim (Festival of Lots). |
