| Not | Papyrus fragment preserving a letter to an employee or partner concerning joint business affairs, written in Egypt and dated by the editors to around 200 AD. 'Dioscorus to his (dearest?) Ammonius, many greetings. I wish you to know that I got a letter from you through our common friend Herminus and understand that you had got from him for my account 40 drachmas in amount, and likewise 3 artabas of wheat, and from Apollos 16 drachmas, so that the total is 56 drachmas. Be assured that in proportion as you perform your duties my part shall not be wanting to you, but I will despatch it to you; wherefore I beseech you, brother, attend to them not as if they were property held on lease but as if they were your own. You will oblige me by checking the account for Sempronius, in order that he may despatch it to me. See, [I have sent you?] also a blank roll (?), that he may write (the account) on it ... I pray for your health with all your household, spared by the evil eye.' Verso: 'Deliver to Ammonius son of (?) Apollodorus (?)' |
