| Not | Papyrus fragment written in Greek in Egypt in 296 AD, preserving a short receipt. It is addressed to a butcher, and confirms payment of part of the price of a calf. The price paid evidences the raising inflation rates in Egypt in the latter part of the third century. Translation (Rees, Bell, Barns, Merton II, 1959): Nilus Chaeremon, calf-butcher, greetings. You have transferred in payment of the remainder of the price of a calf, 6,600 (drachmas) in the reckoning, three thousand five hundred drachmas of silver, total 3500 drachmas. Dated the 12th and 11th year of the Caesars, Epeiph 4. |
