The address on the verso is fairly legible and reads: ‘Deliver to Agathopus from Thermouthion ('Αποδοσ 'Αγαθω[πω] Χ απο Θερμουθιου)’. Although primarily from her husband, Taos, concerning an alleged assault, the letter is addressed from Thermouthion, and potentially also written by her. Translation (Bagnall and Cribiore, 2006): Taos to Agathopour his dearest, greetings. I want you to know that Taharmiusis has summoned us--me and Seias and Faustion and the wool seller and his wife. They said that I especially attacked her along with you and an assistant when she was banqueting, and that we took gold things from her--as she says. Please then take case for me, as you have done also for the others--not just because the affair is yours, but also because I am relying on you not to both me (to go) to Alexandria. I also had your son write to you about me, and likewise again the wool seller to write toy you in his letter. Greet your daughter Arsous and Besas and Heraklas and all those who love you. Apollos my son greets you and all your people. Thermouthion says, 'Lysanias said to me, "Bring money, so that I may take it to him."' But she didn't give it. If you want me to give it, write to me and I will send whatever you need to you through your brother if he leaves in Phamenoth. So as soon as you get this letter, write back to us, to me and Thermouthion--to me, so that I may know what care you are taking for me, to Thermouthion, so that you won't fail to get whatever you need. She greets you and all your. (traces of concluding salutations). |
