Chaeromon is a steward for Diogenes and writes to him about the progress on the estate, consisting mostly vine growing and wine making. Translation (Rees, Bell, Barns, Merton II, 1959): Chaeremon to his most esteemed Diogenes, greeting. Kindly send us two yoke-straps for a machine, since the machine in the allotment is idle. They have gone out of the plots in allotment no.8. The water has been released into the crown-land of Philiscus, no.9. 'Re' the manuring, Dionysius has been set aside; I have been looking for another man. 'Re' the watering of the vineyard, the water has been released for <the men?> who will drive the beasts round(?). I am spending a further four days in watering the vineyard. Re the disputed(?) field ... We have locked up(?) ready for transport by water(?) for Heron 390 drachmas' worth of jars of fragrant wine; our fourth part is laid down in the open-air shed. So I have separated ours. Apart from the sixth vat, from the five vats there is a total of 34 (jars) of light(?) wine only(?) ... Farewell, sir. |
