| Not | Folio from a Coptic manuscript, illuminated between the 3rd and 7th century AD in Egypt. Decorative border probably made with a compass. The descriptions of angels in biblical texts, however, are vague; they are described only as brilliant, fiery and shining. As a result, the appearance of angels in art had to be invented. The earliest representations of angels in Christian art show wingless figures. Winged angels only appear in the fourth century, their images derived from Roman Victories or winged genii (protective spirits). |
