The horizontal breakage at regular intervals suggests the sheet was once folded or rolled. The amulet is composed of a serpent (or dragon) eating its own tail (οὐροβόρος) encircling an open bookroll filled with an eight-by-eight grid of Greek vowels. A bird at the top left holds a christogram (⳩) in its beak. The text on the serpent is a common magical palindrome, the final letters being ιαεω, the Greek magical rendering of the name Yaweh (with an additional letter). A tabula ansata (tablet with handles) hangs off the bottom of the serpent. The whole is surrounded by short names and phrases. |
